  • Camille

1936. USA. Directed by George Cukor. With Greta Garbo, Robert Taylor, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Daniell. When George Cukor joined M-G-M it became inevitable that he would direct the reigning queen of the cinema, Garbo. La Dame aux camelias, by Alexandre Dumas (fils), had been filmed several times, including a silent version with Sarah Bernhardt, but it proved a fortunate choice for bringing Garbo under Cukor’s direction. She was never lovelier, and there are few, if any, performances by an actress that are so emotionally powerful and vivifying. 115 min.
