High School II
2004. USA. Directed by Frederick Wiseman. Twenty-five years after his Vietnam-era portrait of a Philadelphia high school—a school that had all the charm of a boot camp or a factory—Wiseman made this decidedly more optimistic and salutary film about a progressive high school in East Harlem with a racially mixed student body and teachers who embrace imaginative methods. During the weeks that Wiseman filmed there, amid discussions of Shakespeare and safe sex, a group of impassioned students were organizing a march on City Hall to protest the verdict in the first Rodney King trial, and faculty administrators were helping a fifteen-year-old girl cope with her newborn baby. 220 min.
