  • Modern Times

1936. USA. Produced, written, directed, edited, and scored by Charles Chaplin. With Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, Chester Conklin. This is Chaplin’s—and probably anybody’s—funniest film, even though it tackles industrialization, unions, and the nature of capitalism itself. The Tramp’s final appearance includes an unprecedentedly happy ending in this glorious last gasp of silent movies. Silent. 85 min.
