Henry of Navarre
2010. Germany/France/Czech Republic/Spain. Directed by Jo Baier. This rousing historical epic has been the dream project of award-winning German producer Regina Ziegler (the subject of a MoMA retrospective in 2006) since she first read Heinrich Mann’s novels about the titular French monarch (1553–1610). The books were written when Germany was dominated by the Nazi regime; Mann presented his view of humanity by way of contrast. A major production featuring a stellar cast of European actors, Henry of Navarre paints an intimate portrait of an idealist forced to negotiate the treachery of a brutal time, and who must pay the ultimate price in his fight for humanity, freedom of belief, and tolerance.
