    1920. Germany. Directed by Hans Werckmeister. Screenplay by Hans Brennert, Friedel Köhne. With Emil Jannings, John Gottowt, Hanna Ralph, Gertrud Welcker. This curious semi-Expressionist melodrama spins a wild fantasy about a miner’s meeting with a devil named after the mysterious star Algol, whose rays offer unlimited energy. Courtesy of Filmmuseum, Munich. Silent, with German intertitles, live English translation, and musical accompaniment. Approx. 81 min.
