The Mysteries of a Hairdresser’s Shop
1923. Germany. Directed by Erich Engel, Bertolt Brecht. Screenplay by Engel, Brecht, Karl Valentin. In this gem by the comic team of Brecht and Valentin, a “silent clown” imagines a barbershop where scalps are shaved and heads roll. Silent, with musical accompaniment. Approx. 25 min.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
1920. Germany. Directed by Robert Wiene. Screenplay by Carl Mayer, Hans Janowitz. With Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Friedrich Fehér, Lil Dagover. One of those rare films that, perhaps by accident, expanded the coordinates of film culture—and may very well be the great-grandfather of films like Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Silent, with musical accompaniment. Approx. 70 min.
