1920. Germany. Directed by Robert Wiene. Screenplay by Carl Mayer, Hans Janowitz. With Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Friedrich Fehér, Lil Dagover. One of those rare films that, perhaps by accident, expanded the coordinates of film culture—and may very well be the great-grandfather of films like Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Silent, with musical accompaniment. Approx. 70 min.
