Jean Vigo (1905–1934) provided the cinema with some of its greatest glories—and one of its greatest tragedies. This program comprises almost his entire corpus of work, a stunning but stunted output that leaves us in permanent perplexity over what he might have lived to achieve. An acknowledged godfather (along with Jean Renoir and Alfred Hitchcock) to the French New Wave, Vigo died at twenty-nine, seventy-six years ago this month. His films provide a glimpse of a unique—but still raw—talent and a haunting legacy.
