2010. USA. Directed by Frederick Wiseman. In anticipation of its theatrical premiere at IFC Center on October 22, MoMA presents a special sneak preview of Wiseman’s latest film, about an amateur boxing gym in Austin, Texas, where ordinary men, women, and children gather to train and spar. Wiseman has an almost tactile feel for the rituals and sensations of the gym, the discipline and intensity of concentration, the rhythmic footwork and the “laying-on of hands” (as A. J. Liebling memorably described it). Thoughtful and sensuous, devoid of bombast or cosmic metaphor, Boxing Gym is an inspired follow-up to the many Wiseman films that have investigated ritualized violence in American society, including Basic Training (1971), Manoeuvre (1979), and Missile (1987).
