  • Tabu

1931. USA. Directed by F. W. Murnau. With Anna Chevalier, Matahi, Hitu. Murnau’s tragic Polynesian saga liberated him from the studios, enabling him to show his mastery of the natural world. The early departure of intended codirector Robert Flaherty gave Murnau’s Romanticism free rein, resulting in one of the most stunningly beautiful films ever made. Never able to make a talking picture, Murnau died at forty-two while returning from securing funds for Tabu’s music and effects track. 80 min.
