  • Coco Before Chanel

2009. FRance. Written and directed by Anne Fontaine. Based on the book by Edmonde Charles-Roux. With Audrey Tautou. Before she was known for ladies’ suits of bouclé knits trimmed with chains, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was an orphan, a milliner, and a modern woman who wanted to wear comfortable, practical, good-looking clothes. Raised in an orphanage run by nuns—is this where her penchant for black and white was born?—Coco railed against the fussy fashion of her youth and the social guidelines that forced women to be either wives or mistresses. By challenging the mode of the day, Coco became a successful businesswoman and a cultural icon. In French; English subtitles. 105 min.
