Day Night Day Night
2006. USA/France/Germany. Written and directed by Julia Loktev. With Luisa Williams. A non-descript nineteen-year-old woman known only as “She” wanders through Times Square wearing a backpack loaded with explosives, floating in and out of the crowd with her finger on the detonator. The film is bisected into two parts: Day, which recounts her physical preparation, and Night, when she is left in Manhattan by her co-conspirators. She is treated as a non-entity by these men, and as a ghost by the crowds that push and shove her aside. Politics are left out of Day Night Day Night, but it remains a wrenching viewing experience. 94 min.
