Kirchner and the Berlin Street

This lecture provides an overview of Kirchner and the Berlin Street. The exhibition brings together German Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's renowned Street Scenes series, created between 1913 and 1915. Considered by many to be the highpoint of Kirchner's career as a whole, this series dates from Kirchner's Berlin period, when the effect of life in the metropolis brought about a dramatic change in his work. Shown together for the first time in New York, these works exude the vitality, decadence, and underlying mood of imminent danger that characterized Berlin on the eve of World War I.

Kirchner and the Berlin Street: A Symposium

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's series of Berlin Street Scene paintings is widely considered a highpoint in his career, as well as a milestone in the German Expressionist movement. This exhibition presents the largest group of these paintings ever seen together. On this occasion, international scholars in the field will be brought together to offer new insights on this defining series in history of early modernism. The symposium will include brief, illustrated papers, as well as a discussion moderated by Deborah Wye, The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Chief Curator of Prints and Illustrated Books, and the organizer of the exhibition. Participants include Charles W. Haxthausen, Robert Sterling Clark Professor of Art History, Williams College; Reinhold Heller, Professor Emeritus, Department of Art History, University of Chicago; Katharina Henkel, Curator, Kunsthalle Emden; Jill Lloyd, independent writer and curator; Sherwin Simmons, Professor of Twentieth Century Art and Design, Department of Art History, University of Oregon; Katharina Sykora, Professor, Department of Art History and Media Studies, Braunschweig University of Arts, Germany; among others.

In conjunction with the exhibition Kirchner and the Berlin Street, PopRally invites you to a night of postmodern cabaret and desperate nostalgia acts, conceived and hosted by performing artist Isengart and featuring the jazz band Grandpa Musselman and the Syncopators, burlesque star Amber Ray, singers Lady Rizo and Sanda Weigl, songwriter Rami Ramirez, and a live installation by Machine Dazzle.

Kirchner and the Berlin Street brings together German Expressionist artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's spectacular Street Scene paintings. Street life captured Kirchner's eye, inspiring him to make paintings that exude the vitality, sexuality, decadence, and mood of imminent danger that characterized Berlin on the eve of World War I.

In keeping with the evening's theme, guests are encouraged to dress in their most decadent cabaret attire.
