This is the last in a series of three inaugural-year exhibitions organized for the new Prints and Illustrated Books Galleries that trace the history of printmaking from the late nineteenth century to the present. Artists & Prints: Part 3 focuses on the ways in which artists have consistently pursued both figuration and abstraction throughout the modern period. Scenes of everyday life by such artists as Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard are displayed alongside geometric compositions by Vasily Kandinsky and El Lissitzky that were created early in the twentieth century. Similarly, prints by Abstract Expressionist artists are contrasted with those by Pop artists. Finally, works by contemporary artists dealing with figurative imagery, such as Robert Gober, are seen alongside works by abstractionists Sol Lewitt and Robert Mangold.
