Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen

The exhibition Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen explores the twentieth-century transformation of the kitchen as a bridgehead of modern thinking in the domestic sphere—a testing ground for new materials, technologies, and power sources, where designers could also exercise growing modern concerns for hygiene, efficiency, and the rational organization of space. This special dinner features live music, performance art, a napkin-folding workshop, and background on the exhibition, as well as a typical meal served in Germany at the time of the Frankfurt Kitchen (designed 1926–27), a Counter Space highlight. Participants are invited to submit a recipe for a dessert competition, and the winner will have the opportunity to prepare the dessert with Cafe 2's chef in advance of the event. With Juliet Kinchin, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, MoMA; Robert Rotifer, musician; Tracy Wilson, General Manager, Art Food Cafés, The Museum of Modern Art; Executive Chef Lynn Bound of the Art Food Cafés; and performance artist Nicolas Dumit Estevez.

Note: guests should enter through the Lauder/Film Desk entrance at 11 West 53rd street, east of the main entrance.

The public is invited to submit a recipe for a dessert competition, and the winner will have the opportunity to prepare the dessert with Executive Chef Lynn Bound of the Art Food Cafés in advance of the event. Recipes must:

1. be of any period prior to 1950
2. be of German origin
3. be accompanied by a brief description of its historical/culinary context
4. have a minimum of steps so that it can be produced and executed on the day of the event and served at the dinner
5. be submitted no later than Friday, October 15, at 5:00 p.m. to adultprograms@moma.org

The winner will be notified by Friday, October 22 and will be required to assist the chef with preparation on the afternoon of October 28, prior to the event. The winner will be able to attend the dinner even if s/he does not have a ticket at the time of recipe submission.

Lecturer Aidan O’Connor (BA, Harvard College; MA, History of Decorative Arts & Design, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum/Parsons School of Design) is a Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA.

An Evening with The Raincoats

PopRally invites you to a special performance by the legendary post-punk group The Raincoats, presented in conjunction with a pair of MoMA exhibitions featuring influential women artists. Kathleen Hanna will kick the event off with a DJ session.

Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography presents a selection of outstanding photographs by women artists, charting the medium's 170-year history. Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen recognizes the prominence of women who have critically addressed kitchen culture and myths. Both exhibitions are associated with MoMA's publication Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art.

The Raincoats, formed by Ana da Silva and Gina Birch in the late 1970s, created a sound, inspired by punk and rock music, that became a significant source of inspiration for future of generations of feminist musicians. Kathleen Hanna was a founding member of Bikini Kill, co-creator of the zine Riot Grrrl, and lead singer of the dance-punk band Le Tigre.

From 8:30 to 10:00 p.m., enjoy an exclusive exhibition viewing and open bar during Kathleen Hanna's DJ set; The Raincoats' performance follows at 10:00 p.m.

Eat, Drink, MoMA

Please join Chefs Michael Romano (Union Square Hospitality Group) and Lynn Bound (Cafe 2 and Terrace 5) for a special evening of Italian cuisine and wines inspired by Counter Space, an exhibition on the history of the modern kitchen. The evening will begin with a gallery talk and a cocktail reception.

6:30 p.m. Cocktail reception and gallery talk with art historians.
7:30 p.m. The three-course dinner begins in Cafe 2. Highlights of the rustic Italian menu to include: Chestnut fettucine with rosemary, walnuts and parmigiano; chicken scarpariello with fennel sausage and mushrooms; and vanilla panna cotta with tangerine compote. Chef Michael Romano will discuss the origins of the menu, with wines selected by Belinda Chang (Wine Director, The Modern) and presented by Tracy Wilson (General Manager, Cafe 2 and Terrace 5).

PopRally Presents: The Best of the Würste

PopRally invites you to The Best of the Würste, an evening of culinary invention and friendly competition inspired by the exhibition Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen. Enjoy exclusive access to the exhibition, centered around MoMA's recent acquisition of an iconic "Frankfurt Kitchen" from the late 1920s, and savor a selection of sausages prepared by some of New York's most in-demand chefs.

The compact Frankfurt Kitchen, designed by architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, redefined the kitchen as a site of modern thinking and a testing ground for new materials and technologies. With this in mind, each of our chefs will bring this same spirit of innovation to the storied craft of wurst making, serving up daring takes on the classic German staple. At the end of the evening, the crowd will award bragging rights to the chef who made the best wurst!

Our talented slate of competitors includes Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli (Prime Meats and Frankies Spuntino), Phillip Kirschen-Clark (Vandaag), Gabriel Kreuther (The Modern), and Tom Mylan (The Meat Hook). MoMA’s Cafe 2 (Lynn Bound and Cristina Nastasi) will prepare accompanying snacks and dessert, and Brooklyn Brewery and Sud de France wines will provide tailored beverage pairings.

Admission includes light fare, beer and wine pairings, and an exclusive exhibition viewing.
