Take a Chance! Exploring the Chance Operation
Thursday, June 12, 2014, 11:30 a.m.
The Paul J. Sachs Prints and Illustrated Books Galleries, second floor
Join Museum educator Midori Yoshimoto and Museum conservator Chris McGlinchey for an exploration of the artistic possibilities of the chance operation Marcel Duchamp used in creating his 3 Standard Stoppages, and learn how this innovative concept and process impacted John Cage in his work with music and sound. McGlinchey provides insight into Duchamp’s creative process, and discusses whether or not Duchamp took a chance with 3 Standard Stoppages. The session ends with an experiment involving dropping pieces of string to see if it’s possible to achieve similar curves.
In conjunction with the exhibition There Will Never Be Silence: Scoring John Cage's 4'33"
Gallery Sessions, impromptu interactions facilitated by Museum educators that explore the creative process, art history, and the experience of art, take place daily in select galleries. Groups meet in the galleries noted on the schedule. Gallery Sessions are free with Museum admission. No registration is required.
FM headsets for sound amplification are available for all talks.
