She/He: Gender and Pop
Thursday, November 21, 2013, 1:30 p.m.
The Maja Oeri and Hans Bodenmann Painting and Sculpture Gallery, Gallery 19, fourth floor
In 1976, critic and curator Lucy Lippard commented, “If the first major Pop artists had been women, the movement might never have gotten out of the kitchen.” At the time of this statement, there were female Pop artists but the recognition went to their male counterparts. In this session, explore why this was the case by considering how gender affects representation, interpretation, and the historical record.
Gallery Sessions, impromptu interactions facilitated by Museum educators that explore the creative process, art history, and the experience of art, take place daily in select galleries. Groups meet in the galleries noted on the schedule. Gallery Sessions are free with Museum admission. No registration is required.
Sign language–interpreted Gallery Sessions are held every fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. FM headsets for sound amplification are available for all talks.
