Electric Junkyard Gamelan
Thursday, August 14, 2008, 5:30 p.m.
The Museum of Modern Art will remain open until 8:45 p.m. every Thursday in July and August, providing visitors with a relaxed atmosphere in which to view MoMA’s collection and special exhibitions, and enjoy live music and refreshments in the The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. Live music will be presented in Sculpture Garden, weather permitting, in two series, MoMA Music: BRAZIL (July, held in conjunction with the film exhibition Premiere Brazil! 2009) and MoMA Music: CHINA (August, held in conjunction with the exhibition Projects 90: Song Dong). Performances will be in two sets, at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m., except on August 27, when there will be only one set at 7:00 p.m. In the event of rain, the Sculpture Garden will close and music will be presented in one set at 7:00 p.m. in the Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 1 or 2. PLEASE NOTE: Sculpture Garden and theater seating are limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.
A cash bar will be open in the Sculpture Garden, weather permitting. The Garden Cart will sell desserts, including gelato and sorbetto from NYC–based Il Laboratorio del Gelato. Terrace 5 will be open for light refreshments inside the Museum on the fifth floor. In the event of rain, cocktails and wine will be available for sale in the Agnes Gund Garden Lobby, and Cafe 2 will offer a full menu, including wine and beer.
Inspired by Indonesian gamelan, this group has invented its own tradition: they play original groove-driven music on improvised instruments and household objects. Haunting melodies and layered, interlocking rhythms are performed on such musical contraptions as the rubarp, sitello, kachapitar, and terraphone. The experience is as visually stimulating as it is aurally exciting. Terry Dame, Julian Hintz, Mary Feaster, Lee Frisari, and Robin Burdulis.
In conjunction with the exhibition Dalí: Painting and Film
