MoMA Nights with Gamelan Dharma Swara

Thursday, August 25, 2011, 5:30–8:30 p.m.

MoMA is open late the first Thursday of the month, September–June, with a DJ, a cash bar, a special menu in Terrace 5 or Cafe 2, and free Gallery Talks.

Regular Museum admission applies.

The 2011 series takes an international focus, featuring adventurous musical performers from Africa, South America, China, Indonesia, and beyond. The musicians build on specific national and popular musical traditions—uniting them in inventive hybrid styles, bringing new instruments into standard ensembles, and enlivening the music with distinctive personal approaches.

The series is the fourth organized in collaboration with Olivier Conan, programmer and co-owner of Barbès performance space.

In the event of rain, the Sculpture Garden will close, and music will take place indoors. Please Note: Sculpture Garden and indoor seating are limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tonight’s Music Performance

Gamelan Dharma Swara

I Nyoman Saptanyana and Ida Ayu Ari Candrawati lead one the most respected gamelan ensembles outside Indonesia. In Java and Bali, gamelan music is as popular today as it was a thousand years ago. It is the musical background to every social and cultural gathering, from religious rituals to mainstream radio broadcasts. At the core of gamelan culture is the belief that music is meant to evolve and adapt its repertoire. The New York City-based Dharma Swara is no different. Its repertoire draws from classical gamelan literature and incorporates contemporary pieces specifically written for the group—a perfect example of tradition redefined by contemporary interpretation. In 2010 the twenty-plus ensemble of musicians and dancers was the first non-Balinese group invited to perform at Bali Arts Festival’s annual “battle of the bands.”

Cash Bars
Weather permitting, there will be a cash bar (specialty cocktails, draft beer, wine, and nonalcoholic beverages) and seasonal tapas for purchase in the Sculpture Garden. The Garden Bar will sell local gelati and sorbetti, ice cream sandwiches, cookies, wine, beer, and specialty coffees. In the event of rain a bar will be available in The Agnes Gund Garden Lobby.

Terrace Dining (rain or shine)
Terrace 5, on the fifth floor, will offer an à la carte menu indoors, as well as an “urban picnic”—antipasti, salumi, cheese, and sweets, with optional choice of wine—outdoors on the terrace, with seatings at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. (reserve at cafes@artfoodny.com and include name, preferred time, number of guests, and phone number). Menus are presented by Executive Chef Lynn Bound. The “urban picnic” is $32 per person (excluding beverages, NYS sales tax and service); price is not eligible for the 10% MoMA Member discount.
