Panel Discussion: City Lifters
Wednesday, September 29, 2010, 6:30 p.m.
Austrian Cultural Forum New York, 11 East Fifty-second Street
With Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner (Urban-Think Tank), Jorge Mario Jauregui, Mitchell Joachim, PhD, and Maria Aiolova (Terreform ONE and Terrefuge), and Andres Lepik (Curator, MoMA Department of Architecture and Design).
City Lifters, a roundtable discussion at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, moderated by David Sokol, explores the emerging Latin American laboratory of visionary ideas on transportation. The dialogue will focus on how the principles, methods, and forms of projects like the Metro Cable in San Agustín, Caracas (Urban-Think Tank), and Manguinhos Complex in Rio de Janeiro (Jorge Mario Jáuregui), both featured in the MoMA exhibition Small Scale, Big Change: New Architectures of Social Engagement, may be applied and adapted in other cities. Dr. Mitchell Joachim and Maria Aiolova join the discussion and, drawing on their expertise within the context of New York, reflect on how the character of these projects might change in the export-import process. The debate will also include Andres Lepik, curator of the exhibition, to raise the question of how architects are rethinking their roles as agents of social change.
