Can I nominate myself? Can I nominate somebody else?
Yes, we welcome nominations and self-nominations for MoMA Scholars in Residence.
What types of scholars are accepted?
Candidates can be scholars or makers from a wide variety of disciplines. Their work may focus on historically underrepresented artists, moments, movements, and geographies, or offer a new lens on more familiar topics. They can also be creative practitioners—composers, poets, choreographers, writers, etc.—whose work offers a compelling perspective for new understandings.
Can scholars be international?
Yes. We welcome international applicants whose home countries will allow a visiting visa with the United States.
Is office, studio space, or housing provided?
The Museum will provide scholars with a fully equipped, closed-door office. We do not provide studio space. Scholars are responsible for arranging their own housing and other accommodations.
Is the residency full time?
Scholars are required to spend nine of the 12 months of the residency at the Museum. Most of their time will be reserved for their own research. The scholars will engage with Museum staff on a regular basis and will participate in conversations that are expected to total approximately four to six hours a week. They will also share their work in a public-facing way (lecture, event, publication, display, etc.) during the fellowship period or in the six months following.
What format should submission documents be in?
Nominations should include 1) a statement or letter of nomination (less than two pages) on the nominee’s contributions, the field-changing impact of their work, and the relevance of this work to new narratives of modern and contemporary art; and 2) the nominee’s contact information and CV. Please submit both documents as a single PDF using the following naming convention: Last name_2024-25 nomination and CV.
