NEOHOODOO AND BURNT SUGAR
Tuesday, December 16, 2008
7:00–10:00 P.M.
P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center

PopRally kicks off the winter season at P.S.1 with a program featuring the exhibition NeoHooDoo: Art for a Forgotten Faith and a performance by Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber. Hailing from Vancouver to Havana, Guatemala City to Bahia, the artists in NeoHooDoo seek to recover the "lost" spirituality of the Americas—a shared legacy obscured amid centuries of colonization, oppression, slavery, and diasporas.

NeoHooDoo gives renewed voice to these rituals and traditions, which played a distinct role in the civil rights and peace movements. Under the guidance of conductor Greg Tate, Burnt Sugar, "a territory band, a neo-tribal thang, a community hang," bridges the gap between digital music making and live orchestral performance. Be sure to view the exhibition before Burnt Sugar starts at 8:00 p.m.-considering they "never play anything the same way once," there's no telling what you could miss.

Guests of this event receive an exclusive limited-edition print by Brooklyn-based artist Susanne Cerha.

PopRally would like to thank Grolsch.
