“My experience with the natural world is like everyone else’s—complicated,” says artist and educator Andrew Kozlowski. “Perhaps it comes down to the tension between how we want to live in nature and how we actually are in these spaces: extractive, destructive, and wasteful.” Surrounded by diverse wildlife in Florida, Kozlowski makes work that often explores the natural world.

For this Earth Month installment of Drawn to MoMA, Kozlowski examines the tension between the indoor and outside worlds with a comic inspired by a poetic form. “A pantoum uses four-line stanzas in which the second and fourth lines of each stanza serve as the first and third lines of the next one,” he explains. “When I started this project, I was having trouble finding a way to say what I wanted to say, but poetry helped me edit down ideas. It gave me a format to work with.”

Jacksonville, Florida–based Andrew Kozlowski publishes a weekly comic on Instagram, also using the platform to share his experiences as a father, husband, teacher, and artist. In 2023, he opened Paper City Publishing, an imprint to publish his work and the work of other cartoonists, artists, writers, poets, and zinesters.
