“I live in Richmond, Virginia, which takes Halloween seriously,” says cartoonist and animator Dash Shaw. For the October installment of Drawn to MoMA, Shaw created a story about how we relate to unsettling and downright frightening artworks. The author of the graphic novels Blurry and Discipline, Shaw says he was after more than a seasonally creepy comic: “It’s more about the joy of conversation around art. I like making analogues because they make sensibilities clear. I recently saw an Egon Schiele drawing of flowers and thought, ‘It’s like The Smiths.’”
Dash Shaw’s graphic novels include Blurry, Discipline, and Bottomless Belly Button. He wrote and directed the 2021 film Cryptozoo, which won the Sundance Next Innovator Award and was nominated for a John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award.
