1936. The Netherlands. Directed by Max Ophuls. With Herman Bouber, Matthieu Van Eysden, Rini Otto. Before leaving Germany, Ophuls had worked mostly as a stage director, though his limited film experience included the superb Liebelei, which featured the expressive Weimar-style camera movements that became the director’s stylistic signature. Although Ophuls was essentially apolitical, The Trouble with Money (one of his rarest films) has a vaguely leftist slant, reflecting the impact of the Depression. After rattling around Europe in the 1930s and making several excellent films in America in the 1940s, he settled in France, where he made four of the greatest of all time prior to his untimely death in 1957.
