Guo’s work as a novelist and documentarian often focuses on the alienation brought about by globalization, and her second narrative feature takes a more literal approach to that alienation. When a young peasant girl in provincial China sees an unidentified object in the sky and meets a strange Caucasian man in a field, the village’s chief politician proclaims it an alien encounter. An off-screen government official arrives at the scene and, although his interrogations of the village’s eccentric characters hint at science fiction, the rapid transformation of the village into a UFO theme park captures the very real tension between China's totalitarian regime and the burgeoning embrace of capitalism.
