Scope and Content Note

The processed Museum-Related Photographs is an expanding collection. It includes photos of: openings of exhibitions shown at the Museum; anniversaries of trustees; members; staff; parties; and benefits; photographs of staff members and trustees of The Museum of Modern Art, and includes personal photographs and publicity shots. The collection also contains architectural aspects of the Museum building, including photographs of expansion and renovation, as well as interior shots of Museum space. Photographs date from 1949 through the present.

The records are open for research and contain no restricted materials.

Ownership and Literary Rights

The Museum-Related Photographs are the physical property of The Museum of Modern Art. Literary rights, including copyright belong to the authors or their legal heirs and assigns. Rights to work produced during the normal course of Museum business resides with The Museum of Modern Art. For further information, and to obtain permission to publish or reproduce, contact the Museum Archivist.

Administrative Information

Provenance

The photographs were originally assembled by the Museum's Department of Public Information, since 1996 known as the Department of Communications. In 2002, the collection expanded to include photographs from other Museum Departments, such as Education. They are regularly transferred to the Museum Archives where they are processed in accordance with the standard archival procedure.
