Description

In 2014 The Museum of Modern Art Archives, with the support of the Leon Levy Foundation, began a two-and-a-half-year project to fully describe and preserve MoMA's curatorial and registrar exhibition files. As part of that project, a section of files will be closed to the public while work is underway. Beginning October 20, 2014, all files for exhibitions dating 1964 through late-1980 will be closed. This includes the exhibitions Painting and Sculpture from the Museum Collection [MoMA Exh. #732, May 27, 1964- continuing] through Pablo Picasso: A Retrospective [MoMA Exh. #1290, May 16-September 30, 1980]. If installation photographs exist for any of these exhibitions, they may still be viewed in the Archives reading room. This chart will be amended to list only those exhibitions for which files may be available.

The Museum of Modern Art Archives' Exhibition Files Chart provides a listing of every temporary exhibition and some permanent collection installations which occurred at the Museum between 1929 and 1995. Film Department Exhibition files are not included in this list; they will be made available in a forthcoming separate document. The purpose of the chart is to indicate, for each show, whether or not the Archives possesses exhibition files created either by the Registrar and/or by the appropriate curatorial department. Registrar files typically include routine correspondence about the physical organization and installation of the show, and often include the checklist. Created by the organizing curator, curatorial files often document the development of the exhibition from proposal stage to execution, and may include related research materials, correspondence, catalogue text, and working checklists.

Exhibition files are closed to public researchers for a period of 15 years following the end of the exhibition. After that time, files must be vetted by Museum staff before they are made available, to ensure the suppression of any restricted or confidential information. Researchers may place a request for exhibition files to be vetted. [Please note, currently there is a moratorium on requests for vetting of exhibition files.] The chart below designates which files have been vetted and are therefore currently available for consultation in the Archives reading room.
