Biographical Note

Ludwig Charell (1891?-1956) was a German-American art expert who owned a large collection of work by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (exhibited in 1951 Bayerische Staatsgemaldesammlungen). Charell also accumulated numerous photographs of Toulouse-Lautrec's work and related images which were deposited at The Museum of Modern Art Library in 1962 upon the instruction of Charell's brother Eric (died 1978).

Scope and Content Note

Included in this collection is a manuscript by Charell on Toulouse-Lautrec for a book which was never realized.

The collection contains notes and an unfinished manuscript by Ludwig Charell for a book on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec; also included are photographs of works of art by Toulouse-Lautrec, photographs of people, places, etc. associated with Toulouse-Lautrec or his work, and a collection of postcards related to subjects used by the artist. (Negatives exist for some of this photographic material.)
