Cover of Primary Documents: A Sourcebook for Eastern and Central European Art since the 1950s.

Published by the Museum of Modern Art in 2002, Primary Documents: A Sourcebook for Eastern and Central European Art since the 1950s is an introduction for English-speaking readers to the region’s major artistic and critical movements of the latter half of the 20th century, gathering together texts by both artists and critics—manifestos, proposals, scripts, poems, and lectures—as well as photo essays, interviews, and chronologies of events. It is the first volume in a new series published by MoMA devoted to the translation of artists’ writings and art criticism from regions on which there has been limited English-language scholarship due to the lack of translated research materials. The series is sponsored by the Museum’s International Council.

The cover of Primary Documents features an image of the following work: Dimitrije Bašicevic Mangelos. Energija. 1978. Acrylic and oil on globe made of wood, metal, and printed paper, 20 1/4 x 14 x 13 1/16” (51.4 x 35.6 x 33.2 cm). Courtesy Peter Freeman Inc., New York.
