Can you discuss your interest in creating optical illusions?

Olafur Eliasson: "The illusion itself is not my main aim. I do use mirrors a lot, kaleidoscopic shapes, camera obscurae, and so on, but I always try to show the way these devices are constructed as well.

An example: my Reversed waterfall at P.S.1 reveals its hose and pump and the entire mechanics behind the phenomenon of a waterfall running upwards. So illusion is coupled with disclosure. The viewer is never taken off into this magical realm where things happen for no apparent reason. On the contrary, I try to focus as much as possible on the relation between cause and effect."
