In my collage I intended on bringing out the true nature
of urban art in the 1970's and 80's. In my eyes graffiti
in those times was a way for urban youth to escape the
everyday troubles of modern poverty. As seen in many
documentaries the MTA system was completely destroyed
or “bombed” if you will.
As I look back on the entire project I realized that
I am an artist in 2006 creating art that began before
my time.
In the early to late 1970's graffiti was just simple
letters that people wrote on walls to get their message
across the city. Later on around 1974 many people or
artist began to develop their own sense of style, others
began to compete over this, which became later known
as the style wars. So to simply say my collage is just
expressing what I feel about graffiti and an era, which
is almost forgotten by many and cherished by few.
Students reflect on what they’ve learned, review films, critique
architecture, and interview artists.
