For PIG 05049, Christien Meindertsma
tracked all the products made from
a single pig over the course of a three-year
study and then published the
results in the form of a book, designed
with Julie Joliat. Pig no. 05049, which
Meindertsma selected at random from
a commercial farm in the Netherlands,
was used in 185 different products,
each one pictured. These include the
expected foodstuffs, as well as non-food
items such as photographic film, toothpaste,
and even the glue used in the
book’s binding. The work visualizes
the complexity of the meat-processing
industry, as well as how many points
of contact we have with animal products
without being aware of them. This
visual catalog of one animal’s afterlife
explores the remove of the relationship
between humans and animals, and
consumers and products. The book
is in the collection of The Museum
of Modern Art.
