Nelson Rockefeller, the son of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and John D. Rockefeller, Jr., played an active role in negotiating with the artists hired to work at Rockefeller Center. He and his mother promoted Rivera’s involvement in the project. In 1938 he became the president of Rockefeller Center. Soon thereafter, Nelson Rockefeller launched a political career that included numerous positions in the federal government, a stint as Governor of New York, and a run for president of the United States.
