Before becoming MoMA’s first associate director, Jere Abbott completed graduate work at Harvard, where he met Alfred H. Barr Jr., and at Princeton. In 1927, he and Barr traveled together through Europe on a tour designed to introduce them to the most important tendencies in contemporary art. Abbott remained at MoMA until 1932, when he became the director of the Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, Massachusetts.
