Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, wife of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was an active and discerning collector of modern art from Europe, the United States, and Mexico. In 1929, she and two associates spearheaded the effort to found The Museum of Modern Art, where she served as the institution’s first treasurer and later as a trustee. Abby Rockefeller eventually bequeathed thousands of works of art to MoMA.
