2009. Tunisia. Directed by Raja Amari. With Hafsia Herzi, Soundes Bel Hassen, Wassila Dari. Two generations of domestic servants—a mother and her two daughters—are trapped in the main basement of a large estate when the young couple that inherited the property unexpectedly moves in upstairs. A game of cat and mouse ensues as the youngest daughter, overwhelmed by curiosity, crosses the divide between these separated spheres and threatens the safety of her family's hideout. Amari uses tropes of the horror genre—and thrillingly extends their implications—to heighten the upstairs/downstairs class division, imbuing the film with a symbolic political charge.
