Since its inception in 1985, the annual New Photography exhibition series has introduced the work of sixty-five international artists.
This year's exhibition highlights the individual achievements of Josephine Meckseper (German, b. 1964) and Mikhael Subotzky (South African, b. 1981). Each artist's works exemplify recent developments in art: the reinvention of documentary photography to picture the diverse conditions of everyday life in South Africa in Subotzky's case, and the expanding of the medium of photography into a series of artistic operations that expose the thin line between advertising, politics and fashion in Meckseper's case. Both artists' endeavors attest to photography's potential to construct, document, and engage with meaning in the world today.
