MoMA

The Permissions Office of the Department of Imaging Services was founded in 1959. For 43 years, this office was responsible for the dissemination and licensing of images of the works of art in the Museum's collections, installation views of its exhibitions, and other archival material, for both study and publication. The Department of Imaging Services (originally "Rights and Reproductions") has set standards for the museum field in both licensing art for reproduction, and in imaging technology from black-and-white negatives and color transparencies and separations to its current, entirely digital workflow.

In order to more effectively service its clientele and market its images, The Museum of Modern Art has entrusted the licensing of images of works of art in its collections to Scala Archives of Florence, Italy. A world leader in the handling and marketing of color images related to art and culture, the Scala Picture Library contains some 220,000 works of art from renowned museums around the world. Scala has offices in Florence, London and Paris, and agents in New York, Tokyo, Seoul, Moscow, Warsaw and Sao Paulo. Scala and its New York representative, Art Resource, will provide high-resolution digital image files provided to them directly by the Museum's Imaging Studios.
