Toward The New Museum of Modern Art: sketchbooks by ten architects

May 3-October 7, 1997

The Museum of Modern Art is engaged in a long-range Expansion and renovation project which began last year with the acquisition of properties adjacent to the current Museum building. As part of the process, the Museum's Architect Selection Committee recently invited ten architects to participate in a charette—a problem-solving design exercise—with the goal of producing a variety of urbanistic and schematic proposals for a new Museum of Modern Art. This exhibition presents the architects' submissions, providing a unique opportunity to examine the creative process of the participants:
  • Wiel Arets (The Netherlands)
  • Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (Switzerland)
  • Steven Holl (USA)
  • Toyo Ito (Japan)
  • Rem Koolhaas (The Netherlands)
  • Dominique Perrault (France)
  • Yoshio Taniguchi (Japan)
  • Bernard Tschumi (USA)
  • Rafael Viñoly (USA)
  • Tod Williams and Billie Tsien (USA)
Also on view in this exhibition is additional material about the work of the architects who have been chosen to proceed to the next stage which is a formal, limited competition to produce preliminary architectural designs for the new Museum. It is likely that an architect for the project will be named next winter.

Toward the New Museum of Modern Art was organized by Terence Riley, Chief Curator, and Matilda McQuaid, Associate Curator, Department of Architecture and Design.
