The Adventures of Robin Hood. 1938. USA. Directed by Michael Curtiz, William Keighley. With Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland. Exuberant goodness triumphs over dastardly villainy. This early Technicolor swashbuckler is at the very top of the British Film Institute’s list of the Best Films for Families, and a screening of MoMA’s own print is a grand way to open the series. 102 min.

Shrek. 2001. USA. Directed by Andrew Adamson, Vicky Jenson. With the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy. When a wicked lord banishes all fairytale characters from his lands, they have no choice but to invade the swamp of the ogre Shrek. In an agreement with the lord to regain some peace and quiet, Shrek sets out with a loquacious donkey to rescue the lovely Princess Fiona from a dragon. 89 min.

Who would have thought a live-action film about a little pig who thinks he is a sheep dog could be so moving, funny, suspenseful, exhilarating, and meaningful? This fantasy has audiences of all ages believing in the miraculous. 91 min.

Madagascar. 2005. USA. Directed by Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath. With the voices of Chris Rock, Ben Stiller. A goofy, fast-moving animation about a zebra who escapes from the Central Park Zoo, and the lion, giraffe, and hippopotamus who try to bring him back. Everyone ends up in Madagascar, where a colony of lemurs kicks up a fuss. 86 min.

Ghostbusters. 1984. USA. Directed by Ivan Reitman. Screenplay by Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis. With Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver. Ghostbusters presents a New York in which the ghouls and ghosts are as ubiquitous as the city’s rats. After Columbia University cuts off their funding, three scientists offer their services as exterminators of the paranormal. 107 min.

More than fifty years before Antz (1998) and A Bug’s Life (1998), there was Mr. Bug Goes to Town, the story of a lovable grasshopper named Hoppity who returns to Bugville, a community endangered by trespassing humans, to rescue his love, Honey the bee. 78 min.

Meet Me in St. Louis. 1944. USA. Directed by Vincente Minnelli. Screenplay by Irving Brecher, Fred F. Finklehoffe, based on a series of short stories by Sally Benson. With Judy Garland, Mary Astor. Minnelli’s first collaboration with Garland, this delightful musical, set in 1903 during the St. Louis World’s Fair, features timeless renditions of “The Boy Next Door,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and “The Trolley Song.” 113 min.
