Ringl and Pit: Remembering Grete Stern and Ellen Auerbach

Grete Stern and Ellen Auerbach, two pioneering women artists who met in Berlin in 1929, started an advertising photography studio, Ringl and Pit, during a time of social liberation, expanding mass media, economic upheaval, and political change. The studio, its name derived from childhood nicknames, soon won international prizes by using humor and irony to subvert traditional images of women in mainstream advertising. Stern and Auerbach are the subjects of Ringl and Pit, a documentary that reflects on their artistic collaboration and friendship. This special screening takes place on the centenary of Auerbach’s birth, May 20, 1906, and on the occasion of the publication of The Third Eye: The Life and Work of Ellen Auerbach by Inka Graeve, Chief Curator of Photography and New Media, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich.
