Michael Powell’s The Red Shoes
September 30

September 30 marks the centenary of the birth of writer-director Michael Powell (1905–1990), one of cinema’s greatest artists. To commemorate this occasion, the Department of Film and Media presents one of Powell’s most beloved collaborations with Emeric Pressburger.

Organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film and Media, and Thelma Schoonmaker.

The Red Shoes. 1948. Great Britain. Written and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Cinematography (Technicolor) by Jack Cardiff. Music by Brian Easdale. Art direction by Hein Heckroth and Arthur Lawson. With Anton Wallbrook, Moira Shearer, Marius Goring, Leonid Massine. A memorable, delirious, color-saturated melodrama. A dedicated ballerina, driven hard by her impresario, is loved by a possessive composer. 133 min.
Friday, September 30, 6:00. T1
