Special: Amy Stechler’s The Life and
Times of Frida Kahlo
September 12
Organized by Charles Silver, Associate Curator, Department
of Film and Media.

The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo. 2005. USA.
Written and directed by Amy Stechler. Narrated by Rita Moreno.
With Lila Downs as the voice of Kahlo. Stechler uses rare footage
including home movies, previously unavailable photographs, and
paintings to create an extraordinarily poignant and sympathetic
portrait of this gifted, complex artist. Featuring interviews with
the novelist Carlos Fuentes and biographer Hayden Herrera, Stechler’s
documentary depicts Kahlo as a central figure in both the artistic
ferment and political turmoil of her time, addressing her role
as the protégée, and later the wife, of Diego Rivera,
and her brief affair with Leon Trotsky. 90 min.
Monday,
September 12, 8:00 (introduced by the director); Wednesday, September
