Outstanding Short Films from International Festivals
March 22, 2004

This annual showcase, cosponsored by the New York Film and Video Council and The Museum of Modern Art’s Department of Film and Media, comprises short documentaries, narratives, and animated and experimental films, all of which have been shown at international festivals and are now having their New York premieres. The program will be introduced by Clare Gartrell Davis, President of the New York Film and Video Council.

Tender Bodies. 2003. USA. Directed by James Duesing. A darkly humorous animation about characters resulting from genetic experimentation. 8 min.
Na Lona (On the Canvas). 2002. Brazil. Directed by Stefan Hess. An offbeat documentary about a photographer who records the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. In Portuguese, English subtitles. 14 min.
Un Amour de tracteur (In the Wake of the Tractor). 2002. France. Directed by Erell Guillemer. Farmers in Normandy race against time to harvest oysters with their tractors in the English Channel at low tide. Without narration. 12 min.
J’attendrai le suivant… (I’ll Wait for the Next One). 2002. France. Directed by Philippe Orreindy. In this bittersweet comedy, a woman’s hopes for love lead to a big misunderstanding. In French, English subtitles. 5 min.
Starry Night. 2002. USA. Directed by Irra Verbitsky. A first-person retelling of the killing of Jews at Babiy Yar, in the Ukraine, during World War II. Animation. 4 min.
The Lift. 2001. Great Britain. Directed by Marc Isaacs. A cross-section of life in a working-class apartment building in London, as revealed in the confines of a small elevator. 24 min.
Kaliause (Scarecrow). 2002. Lithuania. Directed by Rimantas Gruodis. A documentary about Lithuanian farmers who have created an art form out of the unusual scarecrows that they erect at the edge of the forest to ward off birds and other animals. Without narration. 9 min.
Pyongyang Robogirl. 2001. Finland. Directed by Jouni Hokkanen, Simojukka Ruippo. Shot clandestinely by two Finns during a visit to Pyongyang, North Korea, the film captures the poetry in motion of the doll-like female police officers who direct the flow of traffic at main intersections. Without narration. 4 min.
Loon Dreaming. 2002. Canada. Directed by Iriz Paabo. An animated film about life above and below the surface of a lake, seen through the eyes of a loon. Without narration. 6 min.
