76th Academy Award–Nominated Documentary Shorts
February 22, 2004

The Department of Film and Media presents the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominees from 2003 in the category of Best Documentary Shorts.

Nominated short films in the categories of Best Animated Shorts and Best Live-Action Shorts will be shown only at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International, 111 East 59 Street (between Park and Lexington Avenues), on Saturday, February 21, at 2:00 P.M. MoMA members are offered a special reduced rate of $3.00, and can call (888) 778-7575 to reserve tickets.

Asylum. Directed by Sandy McLeod and Gini Reticker. Baaba is a Ghanaian woman seeking asylum in the U.S. Caught with a false passport by the INS, she recounts the story of mistreatment at her father's hands as she waits in detention for a ruling on her case. 20 min.
Cherynobyl Heart. Produced and directed by Maryann DeLeo. In Belarus, the country most seriously contaminated by the Chernobyl accident, the terrible effects of radiation are seen in the high levels of cancer, birth defects, and heart conditions suffered by the region's children. 39 min.
Ferry Tales. Directed by Katja Esson. Produced by Katja Esson, Sabine Schenk, and Corinna Sager. In the powder room of the Staten Island Ferry, a group of women gather each day to put on their make-up and share their thoughts and problems. 40 min.
