A Work in Progress: The Films of Sofia Coppola
April 6–7, 2004
On March 30, the Department of Film and Media,
The Junior Associates, and the Film and Media Committee of The
Museum
of Modern Art will
host their annual event, A Work in Progress. This benefit, now
in its third year, celebrates a distinctive directorial voice
in the
art of filmmaking. This year’s honoree is Sofia Coppola,
director of Lick the Star (1998), The Virgin Suicides (1999),
and Lost in
Translation (2003).
Organized
by Natalie Hirniak, Manager, Department of Film and Media, and Maggie
Lyko, Manager, The Junior Associates, and Associate Director, Department
of Development. Thanks to Sofia Coppola, Paramount Classics, and
Focus Features for the loan of prints.

. 1998. USA. Directed by Sofia Coppola. Screenplay

. 1999. USA. Directed by Sofia Coppola. Screenplay
by Coppola, based on the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides. With Kirsten
Dunst, James Woods, Kathleen Turner. “I really didn’t
know I wanted to be a director until I read The Virgin Suicides and
saw so clearly how it had to be done,” Coppola has said. Indeed,
in her adaptation of Eugenides’s novel, Coppola reveals an
understanding of cinema as both an emotional and visual medium. 97
min.
. 2003. USA/Japan. Written and directed by Sofia
Coppola. With Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Giovanni Ribisi.
As much a valentine to the city of Tokyo as it is a study of emotional
and geographical dislocation, this beautifully crafted film, saturated
with romantic melancholy, reminds us of the special moments in
life that leave an indelible imprint. 102 min.
