MediaScope: February 2003
February 10 and 24, 2003
MediaScope is a new initiative devoted
to artists and their recent media projects. Focusing on experimentation
with form and content, the program features both emerging and recognized
artists who discuss their work with the audience. MediaScope
is presented biweekly on Monday nights, and explores filmmaking
and videomaking, as well as Web-based, installation, and digital
art practices.
Organized by Sally Berger, Assistant Curator;
Jytte Jensen, Associate Curator; Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator;
Barbara London, Associate Curator; and Joshua Siegel, Assistant
Curator, Department of Film and Media.

An Evening with Przemyslaw “Shemie”
Reut (New York)
Przemyslaw “Shemie” Reut discusses the various forms
of photography used in his feature film Paradox Lake (2002),
one of the discoveries of last year’s New Directors/New Films
festival. Intentionally ambiguous scenes seamlessly shift from vérité
to fantasy in this innovative tale about autistic children and their
camp counselors. Artist present. Approx. 120 min.
Monday, February 10, 8:15
An Evening with Miranda July (Portland,
Oregon)
Miranda July discusses her videos and performances (including Nest
of Tens [2000] and The Swan Tool [2001]), sound recordings,
and two Web projects (Learning to Love You More and How
Will I Know Her? [both 2002]). July is known for Joanie 4 Jackie
(formerly Big Miss Moviola), an alternative distribution system
she founded in 1995 for videos and films made by women. Currently
July is working on a feature-length movie, several short stories,
and a new performance. You are invited to participate in July’s
presentation by visiting http://www.learningtoloveyoumore.com/
