Special Screening: Cuba, Island of Music
May 29, 2003
Organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film
and Media.

. 2002. USA/Cuba. Directed
by Gary Keys. Produced by Keys, Brendan Ward, Henry
Jarecki. Keys asks how it is that a people so burdened
by a supposedly repressive regime and an economic embargo can create
such free and liberating music. The documentary profiles not only such
renowned artists as Orquesta Aragon, Los Zafiros, and Manolin,
but also “barrio” musicians from urban
streets and country villages. Digital projection. Director
present. 80 min.
