MediaScope:
Kutlug Ataman and Screening of Lola and Billy the Kid
December 8–9, 2002
MediaScope is a new initiative devoted
to artists and their recent media projects. Focusing on experimentation
with form and content, the program features both emerging and recognized
artists, who discuss their work with the audience. MediaScope
is presented biweekly on Monday nights, and explores filmmaking
and videomaking, as well as Web-based, installation, and digital
art practices.
Organized by Sally Berger, Assistant Curator;
Jytte Jensen, Associate Curator; Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator;
Barbara London, Associate Curator; and Joshua Siegel, Assistant
Curator.

Kutlug Ataman's installations and films feature characters on the
edge. The obsessive horticulturist in The 4 Seasons of Veronica
Read (2001) shares her tiny British flat with thousands of
amaryllis plants. The dazzling transvestite in Never My Soul
(2001) leads a normal-seeming home life. Born in Istanbul, Ataman
has shown his work at Lehmann Maupin (New York), and at Documenta
11 (Kassel) and the São Paulo, Berlin, and Venice biennials.
Artist present. Approx. 90 min.
1998. Germany. Written
and directed by Kutlug Ataman. Ataman's second feature chronicles
the lives of gay and transsexual Turks in Berlin, for whom identity
is malleable. Living on the margin, they escape the grip of repressive
social structures. Artist present. 91 min.
