Integrating the Ground - Pissarro

In his treatment of Bridge and Dam, Pontoise, Pissarro uses the ground in a fundamentally different way than Cézanne. Once again he has created a painting with an overall tonality, painted from edge to edge and corner to corner. Glimpses of the ground can be seen at the edges of the canvas, and the ground is especially light. Pissarro has used the tone of the ground to set the overall high key and blonde tone of the painting, resulting in this remarkably limpid scene.
